   Nuno Duarte Gil Mendes Bettencourt (born September 20, 1966) is a Portuguese-American guitarist and singer-songwriter best known for his role as the lead guitarist of the Boston hard rock band Extreme whose hits include the acoustic ballads "More Than Words" and "Hole Hearted". The songs reached #1 and #4, respectively, on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1991. He has since recorded a solo project called Schizophonic as well as with bands he founded including Mourning Widows, Population 1, DramaGods, The Satellite Party (headed by Jane's Addiction's former frontman and Lollapalooza co-founder Perry Farrell), and then reunited with Extreme to record new music and tour.

    Extreme's best recording displays this band's considerable talents to their best advantage, particularly those of guitarist Nuno Bettencourt and vocalist Gary Cherone (as of this writing, sounding a lot like Sammy Hagar as the current singer for Van Halen). The album's success has mainly been due to the soft-spoken hits "More Than Words" and "Hole Hearted," but there's plenty to like on this album, which explores the very general theme of love in a cynical world. Extreme had a lot on their minds when they recorded Pornograffitti, as evidenced by the songs "Decadence Dance," "When I'm President," and "Money (In God We Trust)." Aside from the aforementioned ballads and the loungey "When I First Kissed You," this album rocks out, examining serious themes with considerable humor, which prevents Extreme from ever sounding preachy or condescending.

KFC Skin Piles is the first, and so far only Extended Play released by Buckethead with the help of Extrakd and Bryan "Brain" Mantia featuring quotes, movie samples (mainly taken from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre), guitar shards, and beats. It was made for DJs as a scratch and remix tool, which is why the album was never released on CD. It is currently out of print and a collector's item. "A1" features samples from Michael Jackson's "Thriller." "B2" begins with a rendition of the song "Pirate's Life for Me" previously featured on Buckethead's solo album Giant Robot and his demo tape Bucketheadland Blueprints.

Also included is the Tony MacAlpine instrumental track "Tears Of Sahara" that featured Lynch's guest solo.     Michael Lee Firkins, genuine guitar monster from America's heartland, returns with Decomposition, a tribute to many of Firkins' favorite bands and players. The CD opens with a ripping vocal cover of Rick Derringer's "Still Alive And Well" and then never lets up. "I Need You" and "I Know A Little" are covers of some of Lynyrd Skynyrd's classic live material, while Firkins applies his trademark style to instrumental versions of Jimi Hendrix' "Manic Depression" and "Little Wing".     Jonas Hellborg is a bass guitarist with the omnivorous ears of a Don Cherry and the once-in-a-generation instrumental technique of a John McLaughlin. He is also thankfully something of an anarchist.The approach to his own instrument and choice of collaborators has seen him build a body of work consistently rewarding, sophisticated and almost entirely above genre. "Icon" continues an exploration of South Indian musical tradition. This began in earnest with Hellborg's previous collaborations with the sons of the legendary ghatam (clay pot) player "Vikku" Vinayakram (famous for his work with Shakti) and the extraordinary guitarist Shawn Lane. All appear here.Instrumental virtuosity, a practically telepathic communication between the five musicians and unorthodox composition from Hellborg and V. Selvaganesh are the order of the day. This is obvious within the first bars of "Anchor", where Hellborg coaxes microtones out of a slapped fretless acoustic bass guitar over a drone.Umamahesh's vocal proves a rhythmic counterpoint, while Shawn Lane's guitar floats over the high registers with an almost violin-like quality. Lane's shift to rhythmic chords is the cue for Selvaganesh and Umashankar on kanjeera and ghatam to drive the tune forward with stupidly fast feats of percussion. And Hellborg's solo is, well impossible. Distorted guitar, passages of rhythmic unison and a solo with a curiously vocal quality from Hellborg distinguish "Mirror".A structurally complicated piece,it hits a series of breakdowns and rhythmic swells at the nine minute mark. "Vehicle" by contrast sees deliberate, simple arpeggios and chords from Hellborg's almost lute-like bass guitar give way to beautiful runs from register to register.Lane's fluid guitar then takes on a tone something like a sarangi and the Vinayakram brothers exchange rhythms of splendid complexity. This release isa masterclass in cross-cultural collaboration.Not so much the meeting of two different traditions as the invention of a new one. Superb.

    The great webzine Metal Temple writes about Michael Lee Firkins' 2007 "Blacklight Sonatas" CD, "It's an instrumental album with a lot of blues guitar and a cover of Ram Jam's "Black Betty", with Michael Lee Firkins testing his vocal abilities once more. This is the only dark moment in "Blacklight Sonatas" that mainly has some nice blues vibe, a lot of good guitar moments and nice mixing work in the studio. The stereo panning of the guitars is a little bit hard, with two guitars shredding at the same time at your left and right speaker with the rhythm section in the middle. The best moment is the album's title track; a sad guitar is bleeding with a bottleneck sliding to a classical music scale and a brokenhearted almost mournful melody with a glimpse of light inside. A nice compilation of blues, country riffs and solos and with a nice selection of musicians that wade in, like Thomas Pridgen, Chuck Leavell, Michael Bland and more, "Blacklight Sonatas" is the perfect listening exercise for guitarists that want to play the music that Michael Lee Firkins knows very well."

"Tilt" features the twin talents of super guitar shredders Greg Howe and Richie Kotzen on a CD released in 1995, when it seemed Shrapnel Records was releasing a new fusion oriented CD every week. The songwriting on "Tilt" was more or less evenly divided between Howe and Kotzen, with a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Contusion" thrown in for good measure. If you're not a fan of vocal songs, don't worry about the lone vocal number "I Wanna Play" - the vocals are quite sparse - the song being dominated by funked-up guitar and clavinet. A phine phunky phusion effort pheaturing two of progressive fusion's stalwarts.

   "Five", an appropriate title for Howe's fifth Shrapnel release, was again completly recorded, produced, engineered and mixed by Greg Howe at his house. Howe even mans the drums on this one. This recording set the stage for Howe's teaming with Richie Kotzen for two releases "Tilt" and "Project". While some of the tracks are a step slower than some of the 'Allan Holdsworth on steroids' feel of some of his previous releases, there are still plenty of examples of Howe's fluid, dare-devil playing over polyrhythmic, funky, neo-bluesy rhythm beds. "Five" includes Howe's trademark shredding on exemplary tracks such as "Just Kiddin'" and "Acute".

    "High Definition" is the heavy release in which keyboardist Vitalij Kuprij (formerly of Artension) creates a neo-classically keyboard heavy album with guitarist Greg Howe lending a hand producing and playing guitar. This recording is an extension of Kuprij's compositional and soloing skills and confirms his status as one of today's leading keyboardists in rock. Howe is no slouch here either, as he impresses with his guitar chops (going neo-classical/progressive here instead of his typical rock/fusion) and turns in blazing lead work, racing along with Kuprij at mach speed. Amazing feats of instrumental skill!

    Greg Howe's "Ascend" features more of the guitarist's trademark modern sound that seems to borrow equally from rock and jazz. The CD is a collection of progressive compositions which highlight Howe's incredible technique and melodic genius. Over the course of the 8 tracks, Howe duels with keyboard virtuoso Vitalij Kuprij in an intense progressive musical setting. For his part, Howe creates some excellent conterpoint to the furious keyboard work, revisitng a genre of music that helped to contribute to his development as a musician. "Ascend" also demonstrates Howe's skill at phrasing and an effortless use of both speed picking and smooth legato licks.

Greg Howe's "Hyperacuity" finds the Pennsylvania based shredder delving deeper into the experimental fusion idiom, soloing over advanced rhythmic patterns and adventurous chord progressions. The tracks hearken back to Howe's first few Shrapnel releases, filled with high-tech guitarmanship and musical interplay among the trio of Howe, drummer Kevin Soffera and bassist Dale Fischer. Guitarist Prashant Aswani makes a guest appearance on acoustic guitar on "Order Of Dawn", which also opens with a 1:28 minute drum solo, courtesy of Soffera.
